Financial Data Company Cloud Adoption Success Story

From Data Center Deadlock to Digital Dynamism - a Multinational Data Analytics and Consumer Credit Reporting Company's Journey to Cloud

Untitled design (84)

A giant in the credit reporting and information services industry sought to streamline its operations by migrating its critical Atlassian environment, including Jira and Confluence, from an on-premises Data Center (DC) to the cloud. This move involved a substantial workload: 584 Jira projects, over 834,000 issues being tracked, and 6,000 users relying on the system daily. Additionally, 18 custom apps extended Jira's functionality, while Confluence boasted 1,088 spaces and served over 6,000 users with the help of 12 add-on applications. This migration aimed to unlock the potential of the cloud, paving the way for enhanced operational efficiency.

Security Concerns: Outdated Servers and Evolving Threats

On-premises Atlassian environment presented several challenges that hindered its operational efficiency. Here's a closer look at the roadblocks they faced:

Security Vulnerability:

Maintaining an outdated server version exposed the company to security risks. These outdated systems are more susceptible to cyberattacks, putting sensitive data at risk. Additionally, they lacked access to the latest security patches and updates from Atlassian.

Limited User Experience:user-experience
The on-premises setup offered limited flexibility and accessibility. Users could only access Jira and Confluence from specific locations, restricting collaboration and hindering the adoption of the platform. This inflexibility would have likely impacted remote work capabilities and overall user engagement.

Scalability Constraints:scalability-constraints
Managing their own on-premises infrastructure was resource-intensive. This in-house approach lacked scalability, making it difficult to adapt to future growth. As the number of users, projects, and data increased, the existing infrastructure might not have been able to handle the additional strain.

Seamless Cloud Adoption Powered by Empyra’s Experience

Migrating to the cloud was not a straightforward lift-and-shift operation. Many configurations and customizations on the server were not directly available in the cloud, necessitating alternate solutions. As an Atlassian Cloud Specialized partner, we possess the in-depth knowledge and proven track record to help organizations navigate the complexities of cloud migration successfully. Below are some key cases where Empyra's consultants delivered complex solutions.

Adaptavist Scriptrunner, JMWE:scriptrunner

All configurations had to be rewritten for the cloud. For specific script listeners and scripted fields, we leveraged Jira Automation to achieve the required functionality in the cloud.

Power Scripts and Power Custom Fields:custom-fields

IScripts developed by external vendors were extensively used. We were tasked with understanding their functions and rewriting them for the cloud. One particularly challenging script involved scanning all logged time on tickets and creating a CSV matrix of time estimates. Due to the large volume of issues (over 20,000), normal methods were ineffective. We built a utility to run API calls and generate the report.

Document Vault for Jira:document-vault

The original application lacked a cloud version. We identified and shifted to an alternative document vault, which required significant effort to transfer all attachments to the new vault in the cloud.

Problems During Migration:cloud-migration

Like any major migration, we encountered unexpected challenges. During the production migration, boards and filters failed to migrate, and Atlassian could not identify a technical reason. To support the client, we developed a utility to read all existing boards and filters and recreate them in the cloud.

Covering Gaps in JCMA:covering-gaps

We addressed gaps in Jira Cloud Migration Assistant (JCMA) regarding plugin data copying. This involved meticulous planning to ensure all critical data and configurations were transferred accurately.

Optimized Performance and Scalability Drive Business Growth

This financial data company experienced significant benefits from the cloud migration:

Enhanced User Experience:

The transition to the cloud provided increased accessibility and flexibility, leading to improved user satisfaction and engagement. Users now have the ability to collaborate and access information from any location, which has promoted a more dynamic and responsive working environment. This increased accessibility has not only enhanced user satisfaction but also boosted overall productivity as employees can now work more effectively from remote locations.
